Multi-level finance function for UK subsidiary of Fjord - Helsinki
Business Case
Named by BT and the Guardian as one of the top 100 visionary companies to watch inthe digital media industry, Fjord is a Finnish company with offices in Helsinki and London.
The office in London is staffed by a relatively small team that develops pioneeringideas
in the synchronisation of mobile devices with other PC, web and digital media forthe
retail and other physical environments.
But the UK subsidiary’s commercial success was not only dependant on the creativeflair
of the team on ground zero. The company’s physically small presence in the UK,meant
that there was a number of back-office and finance functions that needed the attention
of a finance director and team but without the overheads that the wages of ateam
would bring.
The Solution
Mike Beeston, founder of Fjord appointed Pamela Garrett-Jones at Plus Services in
2003 to handle the finance function on a number of levels. He said "The UK subsidiary
isn’t big enough for its own finance dept – outsourcing solved this perfectly".
Plus Services manage the back-end office finances like the sales and purchase ledger, all
financial reporting and also sit on the board as acting FD.
"To tap into the level of expertise provided by Plus, I would need at least 2 or
3 peopleat different levels. Pamela is very well conn3ected to the company and works
closelyenough for it not to feel like this function is outsourced. Pamela is like
a member of our team"
Over and Above Outsourcing
Plus offer a service that is over and above outsourcing. Providing effective support
tothe client, meant that Pamela had to integrate with the company on a number of
levelsthat stimulated commercial success rather than simply number-crunching and
compliance".
